The Town of Wilton has a town meeting form of government.
The Board of Selectmen is the elected administrative board
for the town. Other elected boards are Finance, Education,
Planning & Zoning, Zoning Board of Appeals, and Assessment
Appeals. Members of these boards are elected by the registered
voters and serve as volunteers.Wilton is the 26th state
Senatorial District and is part of the 142nd and 143rd state
House Districts.
Board of Selectmen
The Board of Selectmen supervise and oversee governmental
operations except for public education. Primary responsibilities
include public safety, public works, land use, health and
environment, parks and recreation, social services, and
the administrative offices at Town Hall.
The First Selectman
is William Brennan. There are also four unpaid Selectmen
in town: Harold Clark, Susan Bruschi, Alice Ayers, and Richard
Creeth.
Board of Finance
The Board of Finance develops the annual General Fund Budget
and mill rate that are presented to the Annual Town Meeting
the first week of May. The Town Charter also requires the
board to review and comment on any proposal for bonds.
Town Clerk
The Town Clerk's office sells dog, fishing and hunting licenses,
and entrance stickers and use coupons for the transfer station;
issues absentee ballots for elections (local elections are
held in Odd-numbered years); records documents and maps
dealing with land titles; issues marriage licenses; files
birth, marriage and death certificates; files veteran s
discharges for tax exemption; codifies town ordinances;
and keeps official town records.
Tax Collector
The Tax Collector is responsible for calculating, issuing,
collecting and managing property tax receivables, sewer
and water capital assessments and sewer usage charges.
Social Services
This department provides crisis intervention, short-term
counseling, and information and referral to local, state
and federal human service programs.
Public Works
Primary responsibilities for the Public Works Department
include routine repair and maintenance of town roads, snow
and ice control, removal of accumulated winter sand, and
the cleaning and repair of drainage systems and structures.
Inland Wetlands Commission
This group reviews applications on all land use projects
within wetlands and watercourses within the regulated areas
adjacent to them.
Health Department
The department enforces state statutes and regulations pertaining
to septic systems, wells, food service licenses and other
matters.
Planning and Zoning
The Planning and Zoning Department is responsible for issuing
permits for new construction and for adopting and enforcing
zoning regulations. The department reviews applications for
commercial and residential developments including office complexes
and subdivisions.
The Zoning Board of Appeals reviews applications that need
special exceptions, or variances, from zoning regulations.
Building Department
The Building Department enforces the State Building Code by
issuing building, electrical, plumbing, heating and various
other permits. The staff also conducts field inspections and
enforces other local ordinances adopted by the town.
Assessor
This department plans and supervises the appraisal of all
real and personal property in Wilton for assessment purposes,
prepares the grand list, gathers and analyzes facts for
court cases, and determines eligibility of elderly homeowners
and renters requesting tax relief/grants, among other duties.
